When will Plug in Solar be legal in the UK?

Current legal position

At present, plug-in solar microgenerators (sometimes called balcony solar or plug-and-play solar) cannot yet be legally sold, supplied or used as simple plug-into-the-wall devices because UK product safety regulations have not yet been updated.

This means:

• Traditional rooftop solar installed by an accredited installer is already legal.
• DIY systems that simply plug into a standard 13A socket are not yet fully permitted under the new regulatory framework. 

What has the government announced?

The UK government announced on 24 March 2026 that it intends to make plug-in solar available "within months", allowing households to buy compliant systems from retailers and install them themselves.

Then, on 16 June 2026, the government launched a formal consultation covering:

• amendments to product safety regulations;
• an interim product specification;
• arrangements to ensure only compliant plug-in systems reach the market. 

So when will it actually become legal?

There is no official implementation date yet.

The most likely timeline is:

• Summer 2026 – publication of the new British Standard and completion of the consultation process.
• Later in 2026 – regulations come into force, after which compliant plug-in solar products can legally be sold and used. 

Until ministers publish the final regulations and commencement date, any precise launch date remains speculative.

Why is the change significant?

The change is aimed at people who cannot install rooftop solar, particularly:

• renters,
• apartment residents,
• homes with balconies,
• households with small gardens or outdoor walls.

Government estimates suggest plug-in systems could save households around £70–£110 per year while costing roughly £400–£500, making them a much lower-cost entry into solar than conventional rooftop systems.
