From 27 August 2026, a major change to UK solar rules will make it easier for households to generate their own electricity using simple plug-in solar systems.
For years, so-called "balcony solar" has been a familiar sight across parts of Europe.
Rather than installing a traditional rooftop solar array, households can use a small number of solar panels connected to a microinverter. The electricity generated is then fed into the home's electrical system through a standard socket.
Germany has been one of the biggest adopters of the technology, where these small systems are commonly known as Balkonkraftwerke — literally "balcony power stations".
Until now, the UK has taken a different approach.
But that's about to change.
Following consultation by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), the Government has confirmed changes to UK regulations allowing compliant plug-in solar products to connect directly to a standard household socket.
The new regulations come into force on 27 August 2026.
For UK homeowners — and particularly renters and people living in flats — this could represent one of the biggest changes to domestic solar in years.
What exactly is plug-in solar?
The concept is surprisingly simple.
A typical system consists of:
Solar panels → Microinverter → Standard household plug → Your home
Solar panels generate DC electricity from sunlight.
A microinverter converts this into AC electricity suitable for use within the home.
Rather than connecting the solar installation through a traditional dedicated electrical circuit, an approved plug-in system can connect through a standard household socket.
Once connected, the electricity generated by the panels can help supply appliances already operating within the property.
Imagine your home is consuming 500W during the daytime.
Your fridge is running, your broadband router is on, a computer is being used and several other devices are drawing small amounts of electricity.
If your plug-in solar system is producing 400W at that moment, much of that electricity can be consumed directly by the home.
Instead of purchasing the full 500W from the grid, the property may only need to import approximately 100W.
The result?
You generate some of your own electricity and buy less from your electricity supplier.
Why is the UK changing the rules?
Traditional rooftop solar works extremely well, but it isn't suitable for everyone.
Installation can cost thousands of pounds and generally requires professional installers, roof access and a suitable property.
That creates obvious barriers.
What if you rent?
What if you live in a flat?
What if you have a balcony, garage or garden but don't want a complete rooftop installation?
What if you simply want to start with one or two panels?
Plug-in solar could provide another option.
The Government says its objective is to give households a simpler and more affordable way to generate clean electricity and reduce their energy bills.
It follows the rapid adoption of similar systems elsewhere in Europe.
What changes on 27 August 2026?
The key change is that compliant plug-in solar systems will be permitted to connect to UK household electrical installations through an approved standard plug and socket arrangement.
The Government has amended the relevant electrical product regulations and introduced an Interim Product Specification setting out the requirements systems must meet.
This is important.
It doesn't mean that any solar panel and microinverter purchased online can simply be connected to a three-pin plug.
The new rules are specifically designed around complete compliant plug-in solar products meeting defined UK safety requirements.
Consumers should therefore look for systems specifically designed and approved for the UK plug-in solar market.
How powerful can plug-in solar be?
These systems aren't intended to replace a conventional 4kW, 6kW or larger rooftop solar installation.
They are deliberately much smaller.
The UK interim specification limits the AC output of a plug-in microgenerator to 800VA, with a maximum current of approximately 3.5A.
An 800W system might sound small compared with a traditional rooftop installation, but it's worth remembering that many homes continuously consume electricity throughout the day.
Fridges, freezers, routers, computers, televisions, pumps, standby appliances and other equipment all contribute to a property's background electricity consumption.
Plug-in solar can help offset some of that continuous demand whenever the sun is shining.
Do I need an electrician?
One of the biggest attractions of the new approach is that plug-in solar has been designed to simplify installation.
A compliant system can potentially be installed by the consumer without the same electrical installation work normally associated with rooftop solar.
However, that doesn't mean every property is automatically suitable.
The condition and design of the property's electrical installation still matters.
Older electrical systems, unusual wiring arrangements or installations where there is uncertainty about electrical safety may need to be inspected by a competent electrician before connecting a system.
Consumers should always follow the manufacturer's installation requirements and the Government's consumer guidance.
Can renters use plug-in solar?
Potentially, yes — and this could be one of the technology's biggest benefits.
Traditional rooftop solar generally requires permanent alterations to a property, making it impractical for many tenants.
A smaller plug-in system could make solar generation accessible to significantly more rented properties.
However, renters shouldn't assume they can simply attach panels to a balcony or building.
Permission from the landlord or building owner may still be required, particularly where panels are being attached to the structure or installed externally.
Leasehold conditions, planning requirements and building safety considerations may also apply.
Can I put solar panels on my balcony?
This is why the technology is often called balcony solar.
Panels can potentially be installed on suitable balconies, terraces, walls, garages, gardens and other locations where they receive sufficient sunlight.
But mounting is extremely important.
Solar panels have a large surface area and can experience significant wind loads.
A panel installed several storeys above the ground obviously needs to be secured correctly.
Consumers should therefore use the mounting equipment supplied or approved for their system and follow all installation requirements.
There are also particular considerations for buildings with external cladding and other building-safety restrictions.
What happens to electricity I don't use?
Solar generation will rarely match household consumption perfectly.
Imagine your plug-in solar system is producing 600W but your house is only consuming 300W.
The first 300W can be consumed within the property.
The remaining electricity may be exported into the electricity network.
That makes matching generation with daytime electricity consumption particularly useful.
Running appliances such as washing machines or dishwashers while solar generation is high can potentially increase the proportion of electricity you consume yourself.
Can I add a battery?
This is an important distinction in the initial UK regulations.
The first plug-in solar framework does not include battery storage.
The Government's current Interim Product Specification applies to plug-in solar systems without batteries.
That means consumers should not assume they can simply add a battery to an approved plug-in solar kit while remaining within the same regulatory framework.
Battery storage remains an extremely useful technology — particularly for storing solar generation and using it later — but it needs to be considered separately under the appropriate installation and grid-connection requirements.
This area is likely to develop considerably as the UK home-energy market matures.
Will plug-in solar eliminate my electricity bill?
No.
It's important to be realistic about what an 800W solar system can achieve.
A conventional rooftop installation may contain ten or more solar panels and generate several kilowatts under good conditions.
Plug-in solar is much smaller.
Its purpose isn't necessarily to make a property electrically self-sufficient.
Instead, think of it as reducing the amount of electricity your home needs to purchase from the grid during daylight hours.
Over thousands of hours of operation, those reductions can add up.

These people could now have a much simpler way to begin generating their own electricity.
A new era for UK home energy?
The UK home-energy market is changing rapidly.
Solar panels are becoming more common, battery storage is becoming more affordable, smart electricity tariffs are changing when we consume electricity, and households increasingly want greater control over where their energy comes from.
Plug-in solar adds another piece to that puzzle.
It won't replace traditional rooftop solar.
It won't be suitable for every property.
And an 800W system isn't going to power an entire home.
But that's arguably missing the point.
Plug-in solar dramatically lowers the barrier to producing your first watt of electricity at home.
From 27 August 2026, generating some of your own electricity could become as simple as installing a compliant solar kit and connecting it to your home.
For the UK solar market, that could be the beginning of something much bigger.
